Kansai International Airport arrival guide
Allow for a Terminal 2 transfer, then choose the railway and services that fit your first hotel.
1. Arrival terminal
This guide starts in the public arrivals area at Kansai International Airport (関西国際空港), after immigration, baggage collection and customs. Your first decision is whether to complete errands in your arrival terminal or move toward the station.
Kansai-airport Station (関西空港駅) connects with Terminal 1 and Aeroplaza (エアロプラザ) at 2F level. Aeroplaza is a separate airport building with facilities including the NODOKA lounge. If you arrive at Terminal 2, take the free shuttle toward Aeroplaza and allow time for the transfer and walk to the station.
1F means ground level and 2F the floor above it. A pickup on Terminal 1, 1F, is not at Terminal 2 and is not upstairs on the departures floor. Match the terminal, floor and service name in your reservation before moving.
2. Internet & SIM cards
Free networks #AirportFreeWiFi-Kansai and #AirportFreeWiFi-Kansai2.4G are listed for supported areas of Terminals 1 and 2 and Aeroplaza. Coverage does not include every part of the arrivals route. Use the airport connection to open your reservation and prepare mobile data for the journey beyond the airport.
- Sakura Mobile: collect a reserved physical SIM or Japan Wi-Fi device at its Terminal 1, 1F arrivals counter. Listed hours are 06:00–23:00. Have your passport and confirmation ready.
- JAL ABC rental Wi-Fi: Kansai pickup requires an advance reservation and uses the Terminal 1 departures-floor counter. The arrivals-floor counter is for returns; do not confuse the two.
- Online eSIM: JAL ABC offers a Japan eSIM for compatible, unlocked phones. This is an online option, not a claim that SIMs are sold at its Kansai counter. An eSIM is downloaded rather than collected as a plastic card.
For a rental Wi-Fi device, check the return method as well as pickup. For any SIM, confirm compatibility before paying, then test mobile data with airport Wi-Fi switched off.
3. Cash & currency exchange
Seven Bank (セブン銀行) has an ATM in the Terminal 1, 1F international arrivals ATM area. It accepts supported overseas-issued cards; individual cards and transactions can still be restricted. Read the fees and conditions before confirming.
This location is not in Terminal 2's arrivals lobby. If you need it, combine the visit with other Terminal 1 errands. An ATM is for withdrawing from an account, rather than exchanging foreign banknotes.
4. Luggage storage & delivery
Delivery (宅配) sends a bag to another address. A coin locker (コインロッカー) stores it for you to collect at the same airport. Decide which you need before walking to a counter.
JAL ABC and Kansai Airport Baggage Service have delivery counters in Terminal 1's 1F public area. Check the destination, delivery date and hotel acceptance before sending a suitcase. Same-day terms at another Japanese airport do not automatically apply here.
Lockers are listed in Terminals 1 and 2 and Aeroplaza. Check size, payment method and the deadline for collection. If continuing to Kyoto or flying home through another airport, consider whether returning to Kansai for stored luggage fits your route. Keep the essentials for your first night with you if sending bags ahead.
5. Getting to your hotel
The station serves JR and Nankai Electric Railway (南海電鉄). These are separate railway operators. Use your hotel's nearest station to choose the operator, train and transfers before entering a ticket gate (改札口), the barrier into the paid station area.
Nankai's Rapi:t (ラピート) is a limited-express train between the airport and Namba (なんば). It can suit a stay near Namba, but “Osaka” covers more than that area. If staying in Kyoto or elsewhere, compare the complete rail or bus route to your address rather than boarding a train simply because it heads toward Osaka.
Check the tickets required for your chosen service, including any limited-express or reserved-seat ticket. Include the Terminal 2 shuttle, ticket collection and station walking time when choosing a departure. If taking an airport bus, check which terminal your bus leaves from.
6. Showers & rest
KIX Airport Cafe Lounge NODOKA is on Aeroplaza, 2F, before security. Its paid showers are an option after you have entered Japan; check availability and usage conditions at the lounge.
The showers in Terminal 1's international gate area are after security and are not a direct stop for an arriving traveler heading into the city. “Before security” means the public area, not permission to enter a departure-only facility.
7. Before you leave
- Allow for the Terminal 2 shuttle if it is part of your route.
- Check whether your Wi-Fi reservation uses Sakura Mobile's arrivals counter or JAL ABC's departures counter.
- Match JR or Nankai, the train and the necessary tickets to your hotel's station.
- Save the hotel's Japanese name and address; similarly named hotels or annexes can be in different locations.
- Keep your luggage receipt, passport and next connection details accessible.
