Chogoro Mochi — Main Shop (長五郎餅 本店)

Kyoto / Kitano / Ichijo ShichihonmatsuJapanese sweets

History

The business traces its origins to Kawachiya Chogoro selling mochi at Kitano Tenmangu fairs during the Tensho era. Tradition says Hideyoshi named the sweet at the 1587 Kitano tea gathering, but that year is not asserted as the founding date; this guide uses the Tensho-era range.

Chogoro Mochi (長五郎餅) wraps smooth sweet bean paste in a thin rice-cake wrapper. Buy it at the main shop; the tea stall inside Kitano Tenmangu is a separate location with a different schedule.
